The Dragon Prince and the Seven Shadow Warriors C12

Chapter 12: The Barbarian King

"So.... What town is this?"  Calebb asked Lannis.  "I'm glad you asked, this is the great city of Rarehaven.  Sam, I've brought you, not only to learn, but to help find your way.  I'm an old man, and a heavy drinker, I probably don't have as much time as you.  But I will take advantage of my time, to help you achieve your ultimate goals."  Lannis said with a smile.

"So whats the plan, Lannis?"

"You're going to kill the Barbarian King...."  Lannis responded still with the same smile on his face.
"Every month, the King of the Barbarians passes through Rarehaven to pillage and rape.  Luckily he doesn't know that you're here to stop him."

"So, thats it.  I'm just supposed to kill a king." Sam said no more, he just shook his head in agreement."  Calebb didn't say a word, he just took a step back in disarray.  He had been around death all of his life, and now that he has his first friend, he doesn't want to see the cold Cold Scythe Bearer again.  The three of them walked near the edge of the town's outer limits, as they waited in silence.  Over the nearby hills, thunderous voices and sounds shook the ground with intensity, they could hear the chants of the approaching threat.  "I hope you're ready, my nephew.  The Barbarian King is a ruthless man, he'll do anything to overcome an opposer.  He's a nasty man, tall, large, and his strength his feared among all of his men.  But, I have faith in you."

Calebb approached and agreed with Lannis, "I believe in you as well Sam."

The chants grew louder, and louder.... they could finally see the tall King, followed by over a hundred men.  The residents of Rarehaven were preparing for the worst, the men began to hide their wives and children.  One family was baffled by the calmness that surrounded the three strangers.  The King was finally at the limits of the town, where Sam met them.  Lannis was perched on a nearby wooden stool, he was eating a ripen pear, one of his favorite snacks..... well, besides venison.

"Well, who do we have here.  Me and my men have business in this town.  Now move out of my way!  The Barbarian King shoved the Prince backwards onto his back.  The King's hands were the size of Calebb, they were enormous.  He moved forward, only to be stopped again by Sam, who got up off of his back.  Sam unsheathed his ember colored sword,  "You go no further!"

The King and his men fell over with laughter, "Do you know who I am boy?  I am the King of the Barbarian Empire, son of the Great Oxton. "  Sam looked at him with a blank stare, and said nothing.  "Well, it looks like we have someone who wishes die, and its a shame too, you don't look like you've lived a full life.  Anyhow men, BRING ME MY SWORD!

There came ten men, carrying the behemoth's mammoth sword.  It took the strength of ten men to carry the ferocious weapon.  The King snatched the weapon from his ten men, and raised it above Samwell's head.  "Tell me boy, why do you wish to die so young."  The King gave Sam a devilish smile, and swung the sword downward.  The enormity of the sword was far greater as it got closer to Sam's flesh.  The Barbarian slashed the garments off of the Prince's chest, there was a minor wound, but it bled nevertheless.  The blood spilled down Sam's chest, as Lannis looked on, he still had faith in his only family.  Calebb observed from afar, still hoping this encounter would end.  Sam jumped up and flung his sword forward, but the King effortlessly deflected the attack.  Sam proceeded to send more attacks and swings, but they ended up failing.  The Barbarian King deflected all of Sam's attacks while laughing, his men as well.

Sam paused..... stepped back.  He lowered his head and his weapon.  There was a slight breeze in the air.  As the Prince raised his head, his eyes were filled with a bright white, he lunged at the King, as he lashed out, the King tried to step back.  Sam's sword just made contact with the right eye of the King.  He knelt to the ground in agony, as the laughter and his men silenced.  "This isn't over...." The King and his men retraced their steps back to where they came.   Silently.

Lannis and Calebb approached Sam, "I knew you could do it...  Only problem is, you didn't KILL him.  You wanna become the next Dragon King, you'll need to be able to kill.  We'll try again some other time....

Lannis walked back up to the mountain where he lied, as Samwell and Calebb followed....
